Amos was a prophet in approximately 740-760 BC. The Book of Amos is the 30th book in the Bible and the third book in the 12 Minor Prophets. His message back then still resonates with us today. He foretold the judgement of the surrounding Nations who were terrorizing Israel. He spoke about social injustice and religious hypocrisy.
The name Amos means "burden." He was a shepherd and a fig farmer. His job given him by God was far from easy. He lived in the Southern Kingdom of Israel and was sent to prophecy in the Northern Kingdom. That's like sending a Republican into the Democrat Convention to tell them they're doing everything wrong. Good luck with that! His message wasn't received very well. His time as a prophet in the north lasted about a year.
Martin Lutyher King quoted Amos 5:24 in his famous, "I have a Dream" speech in 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The message of Amos, like the rest of the Bible is still relevant today.
