Entomophagy, Entomology & Eschatology

“Then the Lord said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt and eat all the vegetation of the land, all that the hail has left.”

Exodus 10:12 AMPC

““Don’t eat insects that have wings and crawl. Even the thought of eating them should make you sick! But you may eat insects if they have legs with joints above their feet so that they can jump. You may also eat all kinds of locusts, all kinds of winged locusts, all kinds of crickets, and all kinds of grasshoppers. “But stay away from all the other insects that have wings and crawl. They will make you unclean. If you touch the dead bodies of these insects, you will become unclean until evening. If you pick up one of these dead insects, you must wash your clothes. You will be unclean until evening.”

Leviticus 11:20-25 ERV

“IN THOSE days there appeared John the Baptist, preaching in the Wilderness (Desert) of Judea And saying, Repent (think differently; change your mind, regretting your sins and changing your conduct), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. This is he who was mentioned by the prophet Isaiah when he said, The voice of one crying in the wilderness (shouting in the desert), Prepare the road for the Lord, make His highways straight (level, direct). [Isa. 40:3.] This same John's garments were made of camel's hair, and he wore a leather girdle about his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.”

Matthew 3:1-4 AMPC

“Then locusts came down to the earth out of the smoke. They were given the power to sting like scorpions. They were told not to harm the grass on the earth or any plant or tree. They could harm only the people who did not have the sign of God on their foreheads. These locusts were given the power to cause pain to the people for five months. But they were not given the power to kill anyone. And the pain they felt was like the pain that a scorpion gives when it stings a person.”

Revelation 9:3-5 ICB

Eschatology in the Bible is the theological study of the "last things" or the final events in history and human destiny. The word comes from two Greek words: eschatos, meaning "last" or "final," and logos, meaning "study" or "word". It focuses on how God’s redemptive plan for the cosmos and individuals reaches its ultimate goal.

Entomology in the Bible is the study of insects mentioned in the text of the Bible and what their purpose might be.

Entomophagy in the Bible is the practice of people eating insects to survive, which insects are acceptable to eat and the possible meanings of eating particular insects.

John the Baptist ate what was acceptable according to the Jewish dietary rules. He lived in the wilderness and survived only on what God provided in nature. He ate a symbol of God’s judgement and he ate the sweetness of God’s Word. He consumed judgement and God’s provision for abundant mercy.

John was a forerunner of Christ who would come and consume judgement by dying on the cross and consumed honey by being resurrected from the grave.
