Fresh Burst of Sorrow
My aim in part this morning is to create a crisis. A crisis where Christ is. In a dark world, the Light of Christ is often buried. It’s buried beneath our understanding. Our lack of faith has a cumulative effect - spiritual blindness builds like layers of sediment in the earth. Layers of deep rooted spiritual blindness become an impediment in our search for the buried treasure of wisdom, of insight, of knowledge.
Too often we look to further the work of God in the world as a way to do greater things without looking to further the work of Gods within ourselves.
What pearl is buried within you? Have you denied Christ the opportunity to unearth the treasure buried within you?
I often say to myself - as if I’m having a conversation with God, “I’m not that bad of a guy. I mean I never murdered anybody and I…..- I go on to list all of the ‘I’ve never done’s’” And then it’s like the Holy Spirit unearths what I have done.
Now I want to marry two concepts. I want to marry them as two become one and they become imparted to you as a third person as like the Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The two marriage partners are these:
1. The Denial of Christ
2. The Pearl of Great Price
polytimos (pol-oot'-ee-mos) extremely valuable:—very costly, of great price.
A. Denial and pearl can be related in a marriage where an abused spouse believes things will change if they just wait long enough.
B. The cost of the pearl requires denial - as in self denial. True self-denial comes as Jesus says, “Take up your cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24
Taking up the cross is the beginning of finding the pearl of great price or better said, creating the pearl you are meant to be.
C. The pearl is not found unless denial happens.
D. The pearl is Christ in you as you deny the world.
E. The pearl is created as you turn the irritants of life into the things of God that all work together for good.
The dreams and visions of this body of believers, the dreams and visions in your own heart cannot be unearthed as treasure until you’ve unburied the Pearl of great cost in your heart. Have you taken up your cross?
You can deny Christ or deny yourself, but there must be a denial to find the Pearl.
Peter’s self-confidence buried his belief that Christ was the Messiah. Peter’s inner man - his heart that knew Christ intimately was buried by his outer man - his flesh under pressure. That pressure is like layers of sediment. His relationship with Christ might as well have been a fossil of stone - a heart of stone. The failures of the flesh produce lies affecting the heart. Left to reproduce, lies will eventually harden the heart to Truth. The opposite of how a pearl is made.
When trust in God is denied and replaced by trust in the in the self, the pearl is buried further in spiritual blindness.
My friends, we must decide our course of action at this point. Will your marriage, your business, your dream, your vision pick up the cross as your pearl finder? Will you sell all to find the treasure that God has in store for you?
