Are You A Cactus Christian?

Like people, a cactus can put a thorn under your skin. However, the tenacity and resilience of a cactus allow them to grow where many species can't. Do you have a resilient and persevering Christian character?

ARE YOU A CACTUS CHRISTIAN?

The cholla cactus has about 35 species that grow in many parts of the world. They can hurt you, but they are beautiful in full bloom!

“We are often troubled, but not crushed; sometimes in doubt, but never in despair; there are many enemies, but we are never without a friend; and though badly hurt at times, we are not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 GNT

The “Jumping” Cactus has the ability to seemingly “jump” onto people or animals. The Jumping Cholla is named for its spiny segments that seem to jump on people when they brush up against them. Because they’re barbed, it’s difficult and painful to remove them. You probably wouldn't want to "rub elbows" with a cactus!

The Teddy Bear Cholla gets its name because it looks soft and fuzzy like a teddy bear you want to hug. Warning! Don’t hug a cholla cactus! Its spines are sharp and will easily stick you like a fish hook! Don’t cuddle this cuddly looking cactus! You will be painfully sorry if you do!

Vibrant Flowers: Despite their tough appearance, Cholla cacti produce beautiful, vibrant flowers.

Edible Fruits: While most people avoid the Cholla Cactus due to its painful spines, its fruits are actually edible. Native American tribes, particularly in the southwestern U.S., have historically harvested Cholla buds and fruit, carefully removing the spines before consuming them.

Wildlife Habitat: Their spiny branches provide shelter and nesting sites for a variety of desert animals, including birds like the cactus wren and Gila woodpecker. The cactus also serves as a food source for desert tortoises and other small mammals. Cholla Skeletons: Once the cactus dies, its skeleton (the inner wood-like structure) remains and is often used for decorative purposes or crafts. The intricate, lattice-like design makes Cholla skeletons popular in-home décor, furniture, and art.

How Can You Be A Cactus Christian?

The Cholla Cactus is:

1. Resilient - Christians have the ability to adapt and bounce back from setbacks.

2. Persevering - Christians are overcomers and believe that God will finish the work He began in us.

3. Endurance - comes through the testing of faith.

4. Deep roots - the Bible is the deep well to draw from life is hard.

5. Stores water for dry times - resilience in reserve - memorize Bible verses.

The cholla grows where other plants can’t. My wife and I met and got married after God used an organization called Climbing For Christ to introduce us to each other. The mission of Climbing for Christ is to go where most people cannot or will not go to reach unreached people. Christians like chollas go to hard places and plant seeds, God brings the growth.

Thanks for your time. Go do something nice for somebody. Jesus loves you and so do we.
